Information architecture

Before

I joined the Optum’s Intelligence Studio team post launch to design new product features. Intelligence Studio enables users to view and organise internal reports in groups called ’mashups’. The maximal approach made it feel overwhelming with low usage of the mashup feature. While mashups are the main reason to come back to the product, the flows to create and view mashups were not optimised. Data showed that many users never created or added a mashup. One of the challenges was to persuade the team that it was worthwhile reworking existing functionality before building new features and. I managed to do this by illustrating the similarities between mashups and music playlists and how mashups could be redesigned by following an established and familiar design pattern.

After

The redesigned app grouped the items in the left sidebar under four headings, with ‘Mashups’ being one of the headings. The Mashups section contains two default mashups, one the user has created and the other the mashups they’ve added. During the relaunch, the product management team met with users to explain what mashups are how they were similar to music playlists. Post launch the number of new mashups jumped, which was attributed to a clearer proposition with focus given to mashups in the design and product marketing.
